Dear SJEEC Families, 

March has been WACKY and MAGICAL, with the celebration of Dr. Seuss and visits from leprechauns on St. Patrick’s Day! We had crazy hair, mismatched socks and silly hats. In the classrooms, the children set leprechaun traps. The clever leprechauns escaped every one of them, but left trails of gold and chocolate coins!

This month, the staff also participated in a day of professional development. We explored behavior through the context of sensory systems. Our trainer was with the Mental Health Initiative from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We learned about sensory differences and how they might present themselves as well as different strategies for supporting self-regulation and healthy social and emotional development in preschool aged children.

This month, I have also been listening to speakers from the Department of Children and Youth as they discuss kindergarten readiness, especially as it pertains to the science of reading and early literacy skills. Teachers will be sharing some of this information with families during conferences. One of the resources that the DCY shared with me is one that I am excited to share with you. The link below offers simple activities you can do at home with your children on a daily basis that will help prepare your child for school and beyond. These activities are for preschoolers and their younger siblings.

And finally, I wanted to let you know that we are so excited for our upcoming Ice Cream Social and Open House on Sunday, April 26th from 2:00-4:00. We will have teachers in their classrooms doing crafts and playing games, a face painter and a magician! As always, we will have fun-filled raffle baskets and ice cream sundaes in Kilbourne Hall. We hope you and your family can join us!
